With a standard tooth cleaning, your dentist will use tools to remove the plaque and tartar that builds up on the surface of your teeth above your gum line.
Deep cleaning removes the build up from beneath your gum line in a two part process consisting of scaling and root planing. Scaling rids your teeth of the bacteria and tartar that has built up beneath your gum line, near the roots of your teeth. This will be followed by a process called root planing, which will remove plaque from the rough areas of your teeth by smoothing the surface of the root. Your dentist may choose to administer a local anesthetic before beginning this procedure.
WHEN DO I NEED DEEP CLEANING?
Your dentist can determine the necessity of a deep cleaning by inspecting your teeth, and using a probe to measure the size of the pockets between your teeth and gums. A pocket that measures 4 or more millimeters can be an indication of possible periodontal disease. Other indicators of disease include tender, inflamed or bleeding gums, foul breath and tooth sensitivity. If you have noticed any of these warning signs, it’s important that you seek treatment. Gum disease can sometimes lead to irreversible health issues. Deep cleaning can be performed on all of your teeth, or in areas of specific need, which can be determined by your dentist after an examination.
